Vickie Weaver Essay by: Vickie Weaver

Skyler Weaver

There are many ways to describe Skyler Weaver. The all too obvious is that he has always possessed a great thirst for knowledge and has a brain to process and access information akin to a computer.

And of course there are his musical attributes and inclinations.

His character, integrity, and honesty would rival any Boy Scout.

He is of course ridiculously good looking and physically fit.

So what if he is a goofball. He is very smart goofball that is fun to be with and enjoys life.

I would say the thing I admire about Skyler the most is that he has never become arrogant and is a natural teacher, peacemaker, and problem solver. Although he may talk a lot about how good looking he is and the largeness of his male anatomy, when it comes to interacting with others he is very kind and resourceful. Even though it has been three years since he has left the high school, the special education kids still light up when they see me and say, "Tell Skyler 'hi', he's really funny and nice."

His teaching skills became evident in kindergarten when I asked his teacher if he seemed to be haughty about knowing how to read before everyone else, his teacher replied, "Oh no, he just helps them. The students go to him as much as they do me." Skyler also showed his natural teaching skills in high school when he would be able to explain equations to students in a simpler technique than the teachers. It is impressive that he is so patient when he is giving instructions because it is really imperative to him that you understand and not just trying to impress you with how much he knows.

In fifth grade his peacemaking attributes were apparent when his teacher sat the class infidel next to Skyler because he was the only one that could handle it. In sixth grade, his integrity was validated when the entire class of sixth grade boys was suspended from lunch, but they were so indignant that Skyler would be punished the principal called and told me I could come and take Skyler out for lunch. Later that week when I ran into the mother of one of the boys, she said her son's reaction to the whole situation was that, "Even Skyler got in trouble." Skyler's peacemaker skills may be summarized with the "blue nun" episode, and when some younger boys got into his room and trashed his Star Wars collection, the only words that came out of his mouth were, "This is very frustrating, but getting upset doesn't help anything."

Since Skyler's problem-solving mind is never in energy saver mode, I guess it's only natural that he is always dispensing solutions in every situation. In grade school when I would ask him what he did at recess, he would reply, "I walked around and tried to figure out how to use laser power for energy." When I asked him to hold my yarn spool, he devised a spindle to put in on so I could wind it myself. I don't think his mind stops even when he sleeps.
